The father of two children who were found dead in Langkawi has been arrested last night, said Langkawi district police.
It is also learned that he was tested positive for drugs upon arrest.
The 36-year-old is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) Child Act 2001 for child abandonment or neglect Section 15(1) Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Conviction under Section 31(1)(a) Child Act 2001 would result in a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years or both.
The Myanmar national is also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for illegal entry into the country.
The police also added that the remains of the two children would be brought to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for a post-mortem.
It was reported yesterday that the children died after they were suspected of consuming food from a trash can.
The children, aged two and four, were found by their father in a disoriented state at around 4.30pm yesterday, near a trash can in Bukit Malut, Langkawi.
They stopped breathing after a few minutes and local villagers called the police. Their deaths were confirmed at Hospital Sultanah Maliha, Langkawi. - Mkini
