Exam experts vetted ‘dream wedding’ question, says teachers’ group

Teachers’ association president Azizee Hasan said Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching did not understand the concept of the question.

PETALING JAYA: An SPM oral examination question “What is your dream wedding?” had been vetted beforehand by experts with the Malaysian Examinations Council, a teachers’ association said today in response to criticisms about the question.

Azizee Hasan, president of the Malaysian Muslim Teachers Association, said the question was aimed at testing the examination candidate’s speaking skills and thought process based on the standard syllabus for secondary schools.

“The dream marriage (question) refers to the way of life of each race and culture, and it is discussed in the Form 4 Bahasa Melayu subject.

“The question is not a big issue because it is more about the way the SPM candidate thinks, evaluates, and processes using the correct language. That is why each skill has its own assessment method and this question is more about the students’ speaking skills,” he told FMT.

However, the question came under criticism from parents and former deputy education minister Teo Nie Ching.

FMT was told that the question was related to the customary and cultural syllabus in the Form 4 Bahasa Melayu textbook which talks about performances in weddings as well as the neighbourhood spirit during these ceremonies.

Azizee said the question-making process went through a very strict question construction method and the panel of evaluators would have discussed it before it was approved. If there was an error in the question, the set of questions would have been rejected at an early stage.

“So we have to believe in the process. If we understand the instrument of constructing the question, there will be no problem,” he said.

Teo said the oral question was not suitable for 17 year olds and the students should not be forced to think about marriage as there were many other major issues to be emphasised in their lives.

Azizee said the DAP leader “did not understand the concept of the question which focused on speaking skills, instead of writing”. - FMT
