Compete but don’t quarrel, Khairuddin tells PAS, Umno

Khairuddin Aman Razali, recently dropped from central leadership positions in PAS, said parties must do more to cooperate with each other.

PETALING JAYA: Former allies PAS and Umno were urged today to stop quarrelling in public if they cannot work together during elections.

Kuala Nerus MP Khairuddin Aman Razali, who was recently dropped from central leadership positions in PAS, said voters were fed up with quarrels between political parties and the parties must do more to cooperate with one another.

PAS and Umno should maintain a mature and prosperous political culture without attacking each other. “There is no need to quarrel despite being different … If PAS and Umno can no longer be together in the election arena and will (instead) go up against each other, they should do it without attacking one another,” he said.

Khairuddin was dropped from the party’s decision-making syura council on Thursday, a month after he was removed from the central committee.

His removal was speculated to have been because he believed PAS should stand by Umno in the Muafakat Nasional alliance while Abdul Hadi Awang had opposed continuing with the alliance if Umno refused to admit Bersatu. PAS is a partner with Bersatu in the Perikatan Nasional coalition.

Khairuddin’s statement today comes a day after PAS election director Sanusi Md Nor said that political stability in Malaysia could only be achieved if Umno was kept in a minority position. However, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is prime minister of the Umno-led coalition government, said political stability had been achieved under his government and an understanding reached with the opposition.

“This has never happened before, and this was done to ensure the country’s politics remain stable … and so, what was stated by the menteri besar (Sanusi) is not even an issue,” he said. - FMT
