PETALING JAYA: An MP and an anti-graft NGO have called for former inspector-general of police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador to provide proof of his claims on the existence of a cartel of ‘dirty cops’.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said Hamid should make such evidence public.
“Hamid should come out and clarify the specifics of his allegations. If he went to the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), what evidence did he provide?” he asked.
Transparency International Malaysia president Muhammad Mohan said Hamid should not only reveal the basis of his allegations but issue a statement on his side of the story.
“The public will not easily accept this issue being resolved lightly, especially when the former top officer in the police force makes such serious allegations against his own men,” he said.
Before he retired in April last year, Hamid alleged that there was a cartel of ‘dirty cops’ which had conspired with criminals to topple him.
Following its investigations into the matter, the EAIC said yesterday that it was unable to determine the truth behind Hamid’s allegations.
EAIC chairman Sidek Hassan said based on witness testimony and documents obtained by the commission, it could not confirm the existence of a cartel of ‘dirty cops’ within the police force.
In an immediate response, Hamid claimed that Sidek was not familiar with the system in the police force and expressed his disappointment on the findings by the EAIC.
Speaking to FMT, Santiago said Hamid and the EAIC should make their side of the story clear in order to dispel negative perceptions of the police force.
“There are perceptions of some kind of relationship between the criminal underworld and the police. Whether it’s true or not, the only way to deal with the perceptions is to make any evidence or investigative reports public.”
Meanwhile, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said the EAIC’s findings were at odds with Hamid’s revelation, and wondered if the investigations were incomplete.
He also questioned the commission on whether it took a statement from the former IGP in the course of its investigations and, if not, explain its reasons for not doing so. - FMT
