Johor polls: Gatherings, processions not allowed at nomination centres on Saturday (Feb 26), says EC

MUAR: There will be no gatherings or processions allowed at any nomination centres on Saturday (Feb 26) for the Johor state polls, says the Election Commission (EC).

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said only the election candidate, proposer and their seconder will be allowed to enter the nomination centres.

"The EC hopes that the nominations process will go on smoothly without any untoward incidents, especially those that can disrupt public order," he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 24).

Johor will go to the polls on March 12 and nomination day is on Saturday (Feb 26).

Ikmalrudin said candidates’ nomination papers can be submitted from 9am to 10am to returning officers at 56 nomination centres by the candidate, proposer and seconder or any two persons or any one of them.

He also said to facilitate the nomination, candidates are reminded to fill and check the form with the office of the returning officer or the Johor Election Commission office before nomination day.

"Apart from that, candidates are urged to make payment for deposits earlier. They should bring the payment receipt on nomination day as proof.

"This is aimed at ensuring a smooth nomination process,” he said.

Ikmalrudin added that candidates representing political parties are reminded to bring the approval letter to use the party’s symbol which should be attached when submitting their nomination forms.

He also urged all candidates and political parties involved to adhere to all the rules and regulations, ethics and orders issued by the EC, police, Health Ministry and local authorities on nomination day.

"The EC would like to inform that the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19 for the Johor state elections had been approved by the Health Ministry on Feb 18 in line with Regulation 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Areas) (National Recovery Plan) 2021," he added.

He said that the SOP for the Johor polls will be implemented strictly throughout the election period.
