A letter claiming that MCA intends to contest in 17 out of the 56 seats in the Johor state assembly is fake, said party president Wee Ka Siong.
“There is a viral false letter using the MCA letterhead and my name.
“To those with bad intentions making such accusations in order to sow dissension within BN, stop it.
“We in BN are always in discussion and every decision made is based on the consensus of the component parties,” Wee (above) said in a Facebook posting today.
The posting also included a screenshot of the false letter, with the word "Fake" plastered over it.
The letter, dated Feb 5, had claimed that the party will “place candidates in all Johor state seats that were contested by MCA in the 14th general election (GE14)”.
It also alleged that Umno and MCA were fighting over the Johor seats of Pemanis, Senai and Tangkak.
Using Wee’s name, the letter had also said MCA will insist on placing their candidates in those three seats as they are “traditional seats” for the party.
Wee, who is also Johor MCA chief, had previously said the issue of seat distributions and the party’s candidates will be discussed after the Chinese New Year holidays.
A reinvigorated BN on Jan 22 triggered snap polls in Johor, in a move to oust PN from the state government so BN can govern alone. It also seeks to capitalise on the opposition's weak condition.
The Election Commission is set to meet on Feb 9 and determine dates for the election.
BN plans to contest against its ex-allies PN as well as the opposition which has Harapan as the main coalition.
