Two-term Tangkak incumbent given nod to defend seat

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng announced this afternoon that two-term incumbent Ee Chin Li will be the party's candidate once again for the Tangkak seat in Johor.

This is part of a roadshow in Johor, aimed at introducing their candidates one by one, which kicked off with the announcement that Paloh's incumbent assemblyperson Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali would be defending his seat.

Ee first won the seat in 2013 when he defeated MCA's Goh Tee Tee who had held the seat previously. Ee won by a 1,537 vote majority which he then extended to a thumping 5,077 in the 2018 rematch against Goh.

Ee, who will be 40 next month, also served as political secretary to Yeo Bee Yin when she was a federal minister in the Pakatan Harapan government from 2018 to 2020.

The naming of candidates comes amid internal tension in DAP over seats, while negotiations between Harapan and youth party Muda continue.

This has stirred unease among 59 state party branches and seven Johor DAP youth branches, which last week urged the party leadership not to parachute in candidates as it did in 2018.

Two incumbents, Tan Hong Pin (Skudai) and Ng Yak Howe (Bentayan) are also lobbying Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong to defend their seats.

Tan and Ng are not aligned to Liew, and speculation is rife that they may be axed.

Ee is said to be from Tan's camp.
