Ministries to table memorandum to resolve DNB, 5G issue

Issues relating to Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and the national 5G rollout will be resolved “once and for all” with a cabinet ministers’ memorandum, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa.

He said his ministry and the Finance Ministry are set to table the memorandum next month to resolve highly debated issues including DNB and the Single or Dual Wholesale Network systems.

This is following the findings of the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IRN) meeting yesterday.

If the debates prolong, Annuar (above) said, “it will affect the 5G rollout programme which is a key factor to Malaysia’s Digital Economy Framework of Action and implementation of MyDigital.”

He was speaking to the media after attending an Appreciation Ceremony for the flood assistance programme ‘Operasi Bantu Hingga Selesai’ (Ops Bahis) in Putrajaya today.

He said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob ordered both ministries to submit a cabinet ministers’ memorandum to finalise the concept and "way forward" on the implementation of 5G nationwide.

"It has been completed and yesterday both ministries sat down together and finalised the draft memorandum which will be distributed to several related ministries to obtain their views,” said Annuar.

He added that the memorandum is targeted to be tabled in the first week of March.

He said the prime minister ordered every agency and cluster to report to MED4IRN every three months and this included the cluster chaired by him which is the Digital and Data Infrastructure Cluster.

“This means our country is putting the highest priority on the digital economy and 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) agenda as well as the implementation of MyDigital,” he said.

According to him, several proposal papers had been tabled at MED4IRN yesterday, among them related to creating iconic projects to implement the digital economy programme.

In this regard, Annuar said the rollout of the National Digital Network (Jendela) is according to schedule, while some are slightly ahead of schedule.

According to him, the number of premises for the 'Point of Presence' (PoP) programme which targets nine million houses, is approaching seven million and is expected to reach 100 percent by 2023.

On Ops Bahis carried out by his ministry, Annuar said about 1,500 ministry volunteers went to the ground to clean 172 houses in Kampung Sungai Lui, Bukit Changgang, and Taman Sri Muda.

The mission also included helping to remove about 6,000 tonnes of waste from the three Selangor locales.

Flood victims also received aid of RM1,000 with RM500 in cash and RM500 in essential goods contributed by non-governmental organisations and strategic partners.
