Most fireworks, firecrackers still banned, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: The police will only allow the sale of “Happy Boom” fireworks and “pop-pop” firecrackers in conjunction with Chap Goh Mei next Tuesday.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Abd Jalil Hassan said these particular fireworks and firecrackers did not contain explosive chemicals that could endanger safety.

However, he said the sale of the two products still required a permit from the respective district police headquarters (IPD).

“The public is reminded that possessing, selling, purchasing and setting off firecrackers and fireworks are still prohibited in conjunction with any festival, including the Chinese New Year and Chap Goh Mei celebrations,” he said in a statement today, adding that anyone doing so could be prosecuted under the Explosives Act 1957.

Abd Jalil said those who set off banned firecrackers and fireworks could be jailed up to a month, or fined up to RM100, or both, under the Minor Offences Act 1955. - FMT
