KOTA KINABALU: Sabah registered a new record high in daily infections after detecting 4,107 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.
This is the first time the state has breached the 4,000 mark. The previous record was 3,487 cases on Aug 26 last year.
State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said today’s cases were 746 more than yesterday.
However, 4,093 out of the new cases, or 99.66%, are in Categories 1 and 2. There are three cases in Category 3, eight in Category 4 and three in Category 5.
He said the bulk of the infections were detected in the state capital, with 1,229 cases, an increase of 447 cases from yesterday. This was followed by the neighbouring district Penampang (424), followed by Sandakan (383) and Tuaran (271).
The surge was expected after taking into account the high percentage of symptomatic or community infections, he added.
“Symptomatic cases are the biggest contributor, accounting for 2,252 cases, or almost 55%, from today’s overall cases,” Masidi, who is the state Covid-19 spokesman, said in his Covid-19 report today.
“The high percentage of symptomatic cases can only push the numbers even higher in the coming days.”
Masidi reminded the public to be extra cautious and to strictly follow the SOPs when visiting crowded areas such as city centres and business premises. - FMT
