JOHOR POLLS | Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), which has been recruiting former PKR members who were unable to fit in Bersatu, is set to field Steven Choong in the state seat of Puteri Wangsa.
Puteri Wangsa is a state seat under Tebrau, of which Choong is the MP. Choong won Tebrau under a PKR ticket in the 2018 general election but quit the party last year to support the BN-Perikatan Nasional (PN) government. PBM has declared itself as BN-friendly.
Choong (above) is one of four candidates that PBM announced it will be fielding in the Johor polls at a press conference in Ulu Tiram, in the suburbs of Johor Bharu.
The incumbent in Puteri Wangsa is Bersatu which won the seat while it was part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition. It quit Harapan in 2020.
Harapan has surrendered Puteri Wangsa to Muda for this state election, which has fielded its secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz.
BN and PN are also expected to contest but their candidates have yet to be named.
Three other seats
The other seats that PBM will be contesting are Tiram, Stulang and Maharani, of which the incumbents are PKR, DAP and Amanah respectively.
Tiram is another state seat within the Tebrau federal constituency.
PBM's Azmi Ali will contest in Tiram while Saiful Bahari and Hasni Asmui will contest in Stulang and Maharani respectively.
PBM has been linked to Bersatu supreme council member Zuraida Kamaruddin who is said to have fallen out of favour in the party.
However, Zuraida has maintained that she is staying put in Bersatu. PBM secretary-general Hizwan Ahmad is a long-time aide of Zuraida. - Mkini
