Pejuang fielding ‘non-political’ candidates, says Dr M

PUTRAJAYA: Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) is fielding a “non-political” line-up of 42 candidates in the Johor polls, says its chairman, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Launching Pejuang’s manifesto titled “Aspirasi Johor” yesterday, Dr Mahathir said the line-up comprised a mix of young and senior individuals whom he described as “nationalists”.

“Many of them are not well-known politicians, but they are nationalists who want our nation to be governed well,” he said.

Since Pejuang would be going alone in the polls, Dr Mahathir said the party had selected the number of seats to contest in after careful consideration.

Among the criteria he cited were the racial demographics of a particular constituency.

“We took into consideration if the seat is suitable (to be contested). If the area is dominated by non-Malays, then it would not be that suitable,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also said that Pejuang did not want to be greedy with regard to the number of seats to contest in the polls.

“We don’t want to be greedy. If we can win even half the seats, that would be good enough,” he added.

Asked if he would be hitting the campaign trail during the polls, Dr Mahathir said: “I would like to go to Johor, but I cannot because my doctors cannot guarantee that I would not be infected (with Covid-19).

“(It’s) also because of my age as the elderly get more seriously ill when infected.”

Dr Mahathir, who is 97, also described his recent re-admission to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

“I have recovered, to my own surprise as I didn’t think I would. But I have fully recovered as I can talk and think logically,” he said.

Dr Mahathir was previously admitted to IJN for an elective procedure on Jan 7 and discharged on Jan 13.

However, he was re-admitted for follow-up treatment on Jan 20 and subsequently discharged on Feb 5. - Star
