After viral message on monkeypox, MOH says no reports received yet

The Health Ministry has not been notified of any cases of monkeypox following online claims that a child had been infected with the virus locally.

In a statement, the Health Ministry said that if the contents of the message are true, the child's family members are advised to have the child treated immediately.

"The public is advised not to spread unverified information. Instead, advise the patient or their family to see medical advice," said the Health Ministry.

Monkeypox is supposed to be a rare disease but has spread throughout western Europe and Northern America in recent months.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion and a chickenpox-like rash on the hands and face.

Most cases of monkeypox involve mild symptoms which clear up in a few weeks. Deaths appear to be rare.

The virus can be spread by entering the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth. - Mkini
