Fashion retailer Bonia has come forth to clear the misconception that it has a mono-ethnic workplace after an employee posted a seemingly innocuous video that has since gone viral.
The company said it has always placed importance on promoting diversity and inclusivity in the company and that the viral video does not reflect the full picture accurately.
“We are, and have always been, a company that prides itself on nurturing an inclusive work culture.
“From our board of directors to our managerial and office staff as well as frontliners, we are proud to have talents who come from various backgrounds.
“This video portrays only a part of our company and does not reflect us in its entirety. Please rest assured that we are actively nurturing diversity from our internal hiring policies and protocols to our training for staff,” Bonia said in a statement today.
The viral video was first posted by a Bonia employee on TikTok, reflecting on her first month working at the company. The video does not appear to be available on that TikTok account any longer.
The 45-second video had scenes depicting the employee’s various experiences working with Bonia, such as a comfortable workspace, free lunch once a month, field trips, and gifts from the company on holidays.
The viral video was reposted on Twitter by another individual, who also included screenshots of the video’s comments on TikTok.
Many netizens on TikTok and Twitter quickly pointed out their displeasure as the video gives the impression that only those of Chinese ethnicity work in Bonia.
Some also said they are no longer interested in buying products from Bonia which is known for its handbags and shoes.
