Fahmi Reza's travel ban lifted

Graphic artist Fahmi Reza today said he is now off the travel blacklist imposed on him due to ongoing cases against him.

"Finally, I have successfully renewed my passport with the help of staff and officers of the Passports and Security of the Immigration Department in Putrajaya!

"The immigration officer told me, 'I like what you're doing. Continue making art'," he shared on Facebook.

Last month, Fahmi said he was barred from renewing his passport because he was on an immigration travel blacklist and was told that Bukit Aman had placed him on it.

Fahmi faces multiple investigations about his art, which makes social commentary on powerful individuals including royalty.

Last month he was hauled up by police for investigation after publishing a drawing of a chimpanzee cartoon character dressed like a sultan.

It was a response to the Selangor sultan sharing that he had procured a painting depicting MPs as apes.

Fahmi has also been charged twice this year for his satirical artwork.

On Feb 10, he was charged under Section 233(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for uploading an artwork that was deemed "insulting a minister".

Commenting on the travel ban last month, the artist questioned why he was not allowed to travel while others convicted of high corruption were not similarly banned.

Fahmi was referring to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak who was convicted of corruption but is appealing the decision.

In 2017, the artist was similarly banned from travel after he was investigated for a caricature of Najib as a clown.

The ban was overturned after the police removed him from the "wanted" list. - Mkini
