Johor custodial death caused by Covid-19, cops say

The inmate who died in a Johor lock up on Sunday succumbed to Covid-19 infection, police said.

This is according to the post-mortem examination by Hospital Sultan Ismail, Johor Bahru yesterday, Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standard Compliance director Azri Ahmad said.

No injuries were found on the 48-year-old man, who was held at the Seri Alam police station lockup, he said.

“A Covid-19 test administered on the deceased returned a positive result.

“The cause of death is Covid-19 pneumonia. The death is classified as sudden death,” he said.

The detainee was held there temporarily before he was to be transferred to the Kluang Prison to serve five months in jail for a drug offence.

The man was convicted of taking prohibited drugs on April 27.

He was found to be “in a weak state” at 8.35am on Sunday by police personnel, who then contacted the hospital.

A medical assistant confirmed he died at 9.35am.

He was the 16th person to die in custody this year and the second to die of Covid-19 since last month.

On April 12, police said an inmate who was found dead in the Indera Mahkota Centralised Lock-up on April 9 died of “chronic lung infection with underlying pulmonary tuberculosis with Covid-19”.

He was serving an eight-month jail sentence under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 at the Penor Prison in Kuantan and was moved to the lockup to attend a court mention on April 14. - Mkini
