PETALING JAYA: The Tangkak magistrate’s court has given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) to the infamous Abdul Hamim Hamid, who was facing a charge under Section 388 of the Penal Code for extortion.
This was informed by Hamim’s lawyer Shaharudin Ali in his statement today.
“Magistrate Zaridah Y Abdul Jaapar made the order after both the prosecution and defence submitted their oral submissions following the untimely death of the prosecution’s star witness, Luqman Hakeem Othman, in the middle of the trial,” he said.
Shaharudin added that the defence had yet to complete its examination of the witness.
Hamim, also known as Long Tiger, had escaped from police custody while waiting to be charged at a magistrate’s court in Johor in December last year.
The 33-year-old Rohingya escaped through the main gate of the court on Dec 15 while waiting for his case to begin but was rearrested in Sungai Petani, Kedah, two weeks later.
Hamim has two other ongoing trials involving a murder threat and wrongful confinement, falling under Section 506 and Section 342 of the Penal Code respectively.
He is also currently serving a one-year imprisonment for staging a daring escape from the court lockup. - FMT
