Pejuang man slams Hamzah for citing Dr M in defending party-hopping

Ulya Husamuddin says Hamzah Zainudin is out of touch with reality on the issue of party-hopping and how it affects the country.

PETALING JAYA: Pejuang information chief Ulya Husamuddin has slammed Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin for citing Dr Mahathir Mohamad when defending party-hopping.

Ulya said Hamzah was out of touch with reality and appeared unaware of the current political instability brought on as a result of party-hopping when making his comments.

“Is Hamzah not aware of the political instability in the country following the Sheraton Move (in February 2020)? It resulted in the severe depreciation of the ringgit and also saw foreign investors losing confidence in the local economy,” he said in a statement today.

He said it was wrong for Hamzah to equate Mahathir leaving Umno and Bersatu with party-hopping, as those instances did not directly interfere with the governance of the country.

On Wednesday, Hamzah defended party-hopping as an acceptable action, claiming it was done in the interest of the people.

He said it occurred at both the grassroots and leadership levels of parties, adding that even former prime minister Mahathir had done it.

Ulya said the anti-hopping bill should be tabled immediately in the best interest of the nation.

Last month, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the proposed law to ban party hopping by MPs was to be tabled in Parliament in July.

A parliamentary select committee (PSC) has been formed to draft the anti-hopping law, comprising representatives from the government and opposition with expertise on the matter. - FMT
