Rogue outriders: MP's son to be quizzed over video

Police will record a statement from Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim’s son over a video clip depicting him driving with police outriders.

Penang police chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said they have contacted Mohamed Khairul Anwar and the latter promised to assist in investigations.

Shuhaily said investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998.

This law criminalises online content made with the intention to "annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person".

"We want to see if there are any elements to tarnish the image of the police force," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

Khairul had uploaded a clip to Instagram on May 6, depicting him being escorted by two police outriders, of which one stopped an oncoming car from turning, thereby allowing Khairul’s vehicle to beat the red light.

No orders from higher-ups

Shuhaily said the two police outriders had acted on their own accord and are now subjected to disciplinary procedures.

"I just want to make it clear that (in this particular case) there were no instructions whatsoever from any senior officers for the duo to escort the public vehicle.

"I hope this issue will not be turned into a polemic," he said.

He added that the police Integrity and Standards Compliance Department will investigate the incident. - Mkini
