PETALING JAYA: Two bills to amend land and forest laws are to be tabled at the Sarawak state assembly on Tuesday which are reputed to be the first of their kind in Malaysia.

The two Bills are the Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and Forests (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

State assembly speaker Asfia Awang Nassar said the two bills are related and will have far-reaching implications and ramifications, Borneo Post reported.

The land code amendment bill will be taken through all three readings on May 18.

“It is a very sophisticated bill with far-reaching implications and ramifications. It gravitates around the definition of what land is,” Asfia was quoted as saying.

He did not give details. However, he said the bill had nothing to do with native customary right land.

The forest amendment bill, to be tabled on May 18, will go through the second and third readings the next day.

Asfia said the Bill had wide-ranging implications on the expansion of the definition of timber produce. “It is like casting a stone into a lake. The ripples will go far.”

The state assembly will also be asked to approve a supplementary budget for 2022 through a supplementary supply bill to be tabled on May 18 with the second and third readings on May 20. - FMT
