Shouting match at PKR division after ‘provocation’ between supporters

State executive councillor Abdul Halim Hussain and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin are contesting to be divisional leader.

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a shouting match at the PKR Bayan Baru division in Penang today as party members voted in the party’s elections.

However, the argument between different factions was quickly brought under control.

State executive councillor chairman Abdul Halim Hussain, who is one of the election candidates, said the incident was caused by provocations between supporters, but nothing untoward occurred.

“There was no scuffle or physical fight. It is usual for supporters to woo voters whenever voting occurs but there’s no provocation because we are all from the same party,” he added.

Halim and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin are contesting the divisional leadership.

Penang PKR chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said voting went smoothly at all 13 divisions in Kepala Batas, Tasek Gelugor, Bagan, Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam, Batu Kawan, Nibong Tebal, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong, Bukit Gelugor, Bayan Baru and Balik Pulau.

The voting entered its fourth day today, involving Perlis, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Penang, in a staggered election process.

In Perlis, candidates complained about several matters, including the distance of tents and “theft” of committee members from contesting teams.

Perlis party election committee coordinator Abdul Rahman Hamzah said however that those issues were resolved after discussions between all parties and voting at the three branches was smooth without any fights or provocation.

In Negeri Sembilan, more than 6,000 PKR members registered for physical voting in Port Dickson, Jempol, Rembau, Rasah, Tampin, Kuala Pilah, Seremban and Jelebu.

Negeri Sembilan chairman Aminuddin Harun said the state was among those with the highest registered online voters.

Registration took place smoothly at the six Melaka divisions of Alor Gajah, Tangga Batu, Hang Tuah Jaya, Jasin, Masjid Tanah and Kota Melaka.

Physical voting has been completeed in Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Kedah, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur.

Online voting for PKR members abroad will take place tomorrow, followed by online voting for the rest of the party members on May 18-20. Physical voting in Selangor will be held on May 21 and in Perak, Sabah and Sarawak on May 22. - FMT
