PETALING JAYA: Jariyah Othman squealed in delight when a special delivery for Raya turned out to be her daughter, springing out of a box as a surprise gift.
And the delivery man turned out to be her Singaporean son-in-law in disguise.
Jariyah’s daughter, Siti Nasuha Abdullah, who now resides in Singapore, had not seen her mother for the past two years, as borders had been closed due to the pandemic.
With the help of her husband, Shaik Izzul Mujahid, she packed herself into a box, which was placed just outside the porch of Jariyah’s house in Kedah.
He was also the video cameraman, and the video clip of the family reunion has since gone viral on Tik Tok, garnering over 53 thousand likes and more than 700 comments.
Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper reported that Nasuha, a cashier at a provision store, had told her mother that she could not travel as she and her husband were “settling into their new jobs”.
Izzul recently started work as an ambulance driver. Prior to the trip back to Kedah, he had met his mother-in-law only twice.
The couple had planned to travel to Kedah for the festivities after the Malaysia- Singapore border was reopened for fully vaccinated travellers from April 1.
For now, Nasuha is just happy to be reunited with her mother.
“When she tested positive for Covid-19, I could not be there for her,” she told the daily. Izzul, who was just as glad to be able to meet his mother-in-law, said his wife had gone through a lot “and loves her mother so much.”
Izzul and Nasuha were married in November 2020, after having postponed their wedding twice because of Covid-19. They had established a relationship online, after Izzul scanned through Instagram accounts of women from Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Nasuha said she responded to his messages only after receiving her mother’s permission. After chatting for a month online, they met in Kedah, and he asked Jariya for her daughter’s hand in marriage. - fmt
