PETALING JAYA: Celebrity Awal Ashaari has pleaded not guilty to a charge of committing mischief in an incident at a gated residential area in Sunway Damansara last month.
The 41-year-old actor and television host made the plea after the charge was read to him before magistrate Zhafran Rahim Hamzah at the Petaling Jaya magistrates’ court today.
Awal, whose real name is Ahmad Awaluddin Ashaari, allegedly committed the offence by breaking the boom gate near the guardhouse of the Challis Damansara residential area at about 11.30am on April 16.
The management had allegedly incurred RM600 in losses because of the damage.
The charge was framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing loss or damage. If convicted, he faces a jail term of not less than a year and not more than five years, or a fine, or both.
Awal, represented by lawyer M. Reza Hassan, was allowed bail of RM2,000 in one surety. The court set July 15 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamed Wafi Husain appeared for the prosecution.
In a social media posting yesterday, Awal claimed that he was denied access to his old house “for being a defaulter”.
He claimed that the joint management body had no power to stop him from entering his house, but did not elaborate on what had transpired. - FMT
