BIRMINGHAM: Hosts England stand in Malaysia’s path to a fifth straight badminton mixed team final appearance after the two teams set up a semi-finals date at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here tomorrow.
Malaysia have made the final since Melbourne 2006 and had no problems chalking up a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals today.
Independent mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing brushed aside Sachin Dias-Thilini Hendahewa 21-14, 21-14 to clinch the first point for Malaysia.
National men’s singles player Ng Tze Yong then secured the second point for the three-time champions when he disposed of Niluka Karunate 21-5, 21-14.

Professional women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei then delivered the winning point by trouncing Vihara Suhasni Vidanage 21-9, 21-5.

SHAH ALAM: Tengku Zafrul Aziz has been appointed as Selangor Barisan Nasional’s new treasurer, replacing Jamal Yunos. The appointment will fuel rumours that he intends to stand for election in Kuala Selangor.
Tengku Zafrul’s appointment was announced by Selangor BN chairman Noh Omar at the coalition’s Selangor convention. Noh said Jamal has been appointed as Selangor BN’s communications chief.
Jamal had previously said he was prepared to make way for Tengku Zafrul to replace him. Tengku Zafrul is rumoured to be eyeing a parliamentary seat at the coming general election, with Kuala Selangor believed to be the likely choice.
Asked by reporters about his appointment, Tengku Zafrul said he was grateful and thanked the coalition for entrusting him with the position.

“I will work together with all of BN’s leadership and as for the strategy in winning GE15, we will wait for Noh,” he said.
Asked about contesting the Kuala Selangor seat, he said that was up to BN’s leadership. “Candidate or no candidate, what is important is ensuring that we can win in GE15 with BN.”
Tengku Zafrul, who is finance minister, was made a member of the Cabinet after being appointed a senator.
He received a warm welcome when he arrived for the Selangor BN convention’s closing ceremony and dinner in Shah Alam at about 8.15pm and headed straight to the holding room, joining Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and BN secretary-general Hishammuddin Hussein as well as Umno vice-president Mohamad Hasan.
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki posted a picture on his Facebook page of himself sitting next to Tengku Zafrul.
“While in the past, there were often differences of opinion (between us) especially on the issue of EPF withdrawals and the moratorium, tonight I was seated at the same table as finance minister Tengku Zafrul during the Selangor BN convention closing ceremony,” he said. - FMT
PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil quotes several sections of the MoU to contradict Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed’s comments.
PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader has questioned whether Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed had even read the political memorandum of understanding when alleging that July 31 was the last day of the agreement.
“How is he supposed to be a leader when he could not understand a basic thing?” said Fahmi Fadzil, PKR’s information chief. “Did he not read the (MoU) in full, or is he not understanding it on purpose due to certain reasons?”
Fahmi said the MoU, signed between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders last year, said it would remain in effect until the day Parliament is dissolved.
The MoU also stated the government agreed not to propose dissolution of Parliament before July 31, Fahmi said.

Nur Jazlan had said in a Facebook posting today that July 31 was the last day of the agreement. He said the MoU was seen as a “political ceasefire” between both sides, it had not stopped PH from making attacks on Ismail’s government.
However, Fahmi said the MoU stated that the agreement would not affect the opposition’s role in providing checks and balances on the government as well as ensuring that Putrajaya will be accountable to the Parliament and to the rakyat.
The agreement was signed on Sept 13 last year. Parliament is yet to be dissolved despite the fact that Ismail has been bombarded with calls for dissolution by his colleagues from Umno, notably those who are aligned with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The present leader is Yahya Cholil Staquf (Pak Yahya) who is eloquent in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.
This video is four years old but it gives you an idea of where the NU is coming from. Not surprisingly this interview (before a sizeable crowd) took place in Jerusalem in Israel.
The very fact that Pak Yahya was hosted in Jerusalem shows that they think differently and that the world thinks differently about the Nadhlatul Ulama as well.

Raub MP Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji has urged Religious Affairs Minister Idris Ahmad to stop issuing statements that infringe on the freedom of non-Muslims to conduct cultural and business activities.
This was said in response to a statement issued by Idris who forbade the drinking festival Oktoberfest to be held in the country, citing social problems that could arise from the festival.
Tengku Zulpuri (above) claimed that all statements made by Idris contradicted the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia slogan pioneered by the government - of which Idris is a part.
He said the minister’s intervention on the issue acts contrary to the teachings of Islam.
“As a Muslim MP, I agree that Muslims should not drink alcoholic beverages and engage in activities that are illegal in terms of Islam, but Muslims should not interfere in the cultural, life and business affairs of non-Muslims.
“This intervention is contrary to the teachings of Islam, besides, non-halal business activities by non-Muslims is a freedom guaranteed in the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today.
Religious Affairs Minister Idris Ahmad
He reminded that Oktoberfest is an autumnal festival originating in Western countries and celebrated by non-Muslim communities around the world, including countries like Palestine.
In Malaysia, Oktoberfest is a festival to promote beer internally held in non-halal restaurants and pubs.
Intolerant statements
Tengku Zulpuri argued that since the celebration does not involve Islamic affairs, Idris should not issue any statement regarding Oktoberfest directly.
“Idris's statement regarding the non-Muslim restaurant business activities has actually affected the image of Islam itself because it portrays Islam as a religion that has no tolerance for the way of life of followers of other religions.
“Intolerant statements like this have also affected the efforts of subjugation and awareness among non-Muslims because they have triggered fear among non-Muslims against Islam.”
He added that Idris had successively issued statements that affect the harmony between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities in the country since he assumed the religious affairs minister role.
On June 9, Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah asked Idris to attend the Bon Odori event in Shah Alam.
This came after the sultan disagreed with the minister's view that the event was religious in nature and therefore advised Muslims not to attend.
"His Majesty suggests that the minister attend the Bon Odori celebration on July 16... so that he can understand the difference between religion and culture," the monarch had said in a statement.
The ruler, who attended the event in 2016, said it was purely cultural and did not involve religious or ritualistic elements which could threaten the faith of Muslims.
His Majesty also urged the minister not to use Jakim to cause confusion among the public.
