BUTTERWORTH: Police seized 17 motorcycles in a pre-New Year Day operation mounted along the Penang Bridge motorcycle lane here last night.
The operation was launched to curb illegal racing activities by Mat Rempit and will continue until early tomorrow as motorcyclists are expected to gather to herald the new year.
In a statement on Facebook, Penang police said the integrated operation also involved the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the state department of environment.
Last night’s operation was carried out from 9pm until 2am today. It was led by Penang traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Zafri Zolkapli.
A total of 187 summonses were also issued to motorcyclists for various traffic offences.
In addition, the JPJ issued 150 summonses for various offences. Ten vehicle owners received notices under Section 48A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 for excessive noise emission.
Meanwhile, the southwest district police headquarters, in a Facebook post, said two men were detained during an operation dubbed “Op Parkir Haram” around the Sultan Azlan Shah Highway area in Bayan Baru near here on Thursday night.
The operation was carried out from 8pm to 11pm after police discovered that some people were illegally collecting parking fees for vehicles parked along the roadside.
“The two men in their 30s were remanded to assist in investigations under Section 50(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” it said. - FMT
