A 14-year-old student in Selangor was tricked into taking and sending nude photos of herself to a sexual predator after the perpetrator impersonated her school teacher and a doctor.
The Dec 15 incident happened when the victim was contacted via Telegram chat application by a 'Dr Fatin', who pretended to know one of the teachers at the girl's school.
The unsuspecting victim who believed that she was talking to a real doctor then agreed to proceed with purported online medical checks, where she was required to send photos of her body.
It was learned that the pervert later impersonated the victim's school teacher, also via Telegram, in an attempt to get the victim to send videos.
However, the girl’s parents managed to stop this when they learned about what was happening. They immediately checked with the school management, which denied that the school had such checks.
Klang Utara district police chief S Vijaya Rao when contacted confirmed that they have received a report from the victim, who came to the police station on the same day.
According to the officer, the female teacher whose name was used in the incident had also lodged a police report denying her involvement, while 'Dr Fatin' was believed to be just a front used by the perpetrator.
Vijaya Rao said they suspect that it could be a new tactic by scammers, who would usually extort money from their victims by threatening to spread their photos online.
So far, the girl or her family had yet to receive any demand for money.
"Police believe that this is a new modus operandi by scammers. A new tactic, where they now prey on school girls.
"We are investigating this case under Section 12 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act. Police are also waiting for a report from the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission to identify the people behind the (Telegram) accounts," he told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
