KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to take immediate measures to ensure people are safe from the threat of the new Covid-19 variant which has been detected in several countries.
In addition, the government was also told to undertake more efforts to ease the cost of living burden faced by the people.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said measures to address these issues were necessary and important, especially when the country is expected to face a challenging economic environment next year.
"The poor are increasing due to the tough life that they are going through. More than 60 per cent of our country's population belongs to the poor and lower-income groups. They need immediate protection from the government.
"I urge the Prime Minister to immediately focus on this important matter through measures that must be decided by the National Cost of Living Council and implemented by the relevant government agencies.
"Let's all pray that our country is protected from calamities and the people continue to live a life in peace, safety and prosperity," he said in a New Year message posted on his Facebook account tonight.
Muhyiddin also advised the public to follow the Health Ministry's advice to avoid infection from Covid-19, including the need to get a booster jab.
"Take care of yourself, take care of your health, especially in a situation where Covid-19 infection is still occurring in our community," he said.
Muhyiddin also wished Malaysians a Happy 2023 New Year and prayed that people would enter the new year in a peaceful and cheerful atmosphere.
In conjunction with the 2023 new year, my family and I wish you all good health, be blessed, and that all matters connected with pursuing your goals and dreams are done with ease.
"I believe that each of us has gone through 2022 with happy, sad and bittersweet events that will be memories and lessons for all of us.
"People say yesterday is a memory, today is reality and tomorrow is still a mystery. Such is our life.
"Let what we go through be a guide and a lesson. Be grateful for all the successes we have achieved. Be grateful also for all the challenges we face because everything happens for a reason.
"Falling and getting up in life is normal. The important thing is not how we fall, but how we gather the strength to rise again and step forward confidently and bravely to pursue our dreams," he said.
The Pagoh Member of Parliament said he knew that in the past year or two, many have experienced difficulties in life due to the pandemic that has struck the country.
"Even today, many are still suffering from the high cost of living and other problems. However, we must not lose heart or give up hope.
"Now is the time for us to wake up and act with more agility. I believe that in this recovery period, opportunities are everywhere for us to advance ourselves and our families as long as we are willing to work. God willing, as long as there is a will, there is a way.
"I am always grateful for the blessings of Allah SWT for myself and my family. My life's journey, like yours, is not always easy. Many challenges have been faced. All the twists and turns in life that we go through actually make us mature.
"All the difficulties we experienced yesterday become a reservoir from which we can strengthen our spirit to face tomorrow more successfully. What is important, do not give up on reaching our dreams.
"This is especially important for young people who still have a long way to go in life. Be confident in your potential and continue to strive to improve your achievements. We can achieve what we want because we are the ones who determine our future," he said. - NST
