A group representing 967 Inland Revenue Board (IRB) daily officers at risk of losing their jobs come year-end next week has appealed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for an extension of their contracts.
Former Terengganu PKR chief Azan Ismail said he received information about their uncertain status and that the group will formally submit a letter to Anwar, who is also the finance minister, soon.
"There are concerns over the impact of a sudden job loss if no urgent consideration is made to extend their contracts.
"This appeal to the prime minister is critical so they can receive the needed extension," Azan told Malaysiakini.
He noted that targeted tax revenues of up to RM140 billion this year could be utilised to fund the extension, with a current average salary of around RM2,000 per officer.
"Many of them are actually carrying out duties of a permanent staff, but yet they are retained on contract," said the Kuala Terengganu PKR chief.
Azan said their immediate request would be a confirmation of an extension of the current contracts.
At the same time, he added that future considerations can be made for those to be permanently absorbed into the civil service.
Malaysiakini understands the officers based at IRB branches nationwide are involved in daily operations including auditing, tax collection and law enforcement.
Among those whose contracts are up for renewal include new officers from one year in service to others who have been working for over 10 years. - Mkini
