Bentong MP calls for landslide risk review on hillside projects in Pahang

Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman has called for an immediate review of all hillslope projects in Pahang for risk of landslide.

In a statement, she said this is to prevent landslides that may cause casualties, as seen in yesterday’s Batang Kali tragedy.

“Realising the occurrence of this tragedy, I urge the Pahang state government to immediately review every project that operates on hill slopes and has the risk of landslide.

“Safety measures need to be emphasised and prioritised, especially now that our country is facing the monsoon season.

“Therefore, relevant agencies and departments must conduct an inspection at each project site located on hillslopes,” she said.

Yesterday’s landslide at Father’s Organic Farm in Selangor led to the death of 21 victims, with the search and rescue operation for 12 missing victims still ongoing.

A total of 94 victims have been discovered at the site of the tragic landslide thus far. Fifty-four of those rescued were found safe while seven were reportedly injured.

All campsites and recreational areas in Batang Kali were ordered to close as a result.

The Johor and Pahang forestry departments had also closed all camping sites near rivers and high-risk locations, including hillsides and waterfalls, until further notice.

Be vigilant

Meanwhile, Young Syefura (above) called on all holiday destination operators in high-risk areas to be vigilant and look for signs of soil movement, such as cracks in the ground.

“Immediately report to the authorities if there are traces of cracks in the area.

“The same goes for other high-risk areas such as riverbanks and coastal areas,” she said, adding that operators should not be willing to take risks for profit.

Young Syefura also called on the Public Works Department to repair the roads in Batang Kali affected by the landslide as it is frequently used by locals who work in Genting.

“If this road is closed for a long period of time, it will make it difficult for them to commute to work.

“The proposed alternative route is quite far and takes time, as well as costs more. They (commuters) will have to pay tolls and incur greater fuel expenses,” she said.

Yesterday’s disaster site was located along Jalan Batang Kali - Genting Highlands. The Works Department said that motorists can use the Batang Kali - Ulu Yam Batu Caves - Gombak - Karak Highway as the alternative route to get to Genting Highlands. - Mkini
