Cops question USM students for attending Fahmi Reza’s tutorial

Police questioned four Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students at 3pm yesterday (Nov 6) in relation to Fahmi Reza’s Kelas Demokrasi held near the Pulau Pinang campus last month.

Lawyer Darwin Lim, who represented two of the four students, claimed that they were called by the Timur Laut district police on Nov 29.

According to Lim, only three of the four students attended the event while the last student simply replied to the graphic artist’s post on Twitter. All four are reportedly in the final year of their studies.

The students were asked why they attended the event and if they knew who organised it.

They were also asked if Fahmi ever tried to incite political biases or influence them to vote for any specific party.

“Then after the interrogation, the police asked the students if they had Fahmi’s personal number, implying that they want to speak with him as well,” said the lawyer.

The case was also brought to the artist’s attention who took to Twitter and asked the police why this was happening.

Fahmi’s Kelas Demokrasi was an online-turned-physical-tour where the artist went to several universities in the country to teach youths the basics of electoral politics.

During the tour, Fahmi was kicked out of many varsities- with USM being one of them.

He uploaded a video where the campus’ security asked him to vacate the premises under orders from the university’s deputy vice-chancellor.

He then changed the class location to a nearby restaurant.

“I think it was absolutely unnecessary for the police to do this. The students thought they did something wrong as if they had committed a crime when all they did was attend an event,” Lim exclaimed.

The lawyer even stated that one of the students was questioned for more than an hour.

“If the police wanted to ask questions, just ask. There is no need to put them in an interrogation room. They were terrified!” - Mkini
