Crocodile on road shocks Kuantan residents

Crocodiles are often seen after the river overflows onto the road, says assemblyman Rafiq Khan Ahmad Khan, who posted a video of the reptile on Facebook. (Rafiq Khan Ahmad Khan Facebook pic)

PETALING JAYA: Residents in Kuantan were surprised when a large crocodile was spotted on the road at Kampung Seri Damai last night.

A 30-second video of the reptile was recorded by a resident and uploaded by Pulau Manis assemblyman Rafiq Khan Ahmad Khan on Facebook.

The video has since gone viral with more than 3,000 views.

“There is a crocodile habitat in the area. So, every time it rains and the water overflows onto the road, the crocodiles often surface,” he said, according to Sinar Harian.

Rafiq Khan advised the public to avoid the route and for parents to ensure that their children do not play in the water there.

Last week, a crocodile was spotted at the Tanjung Lipat beach in Sabah. The local wildlife department has been actively searching for the reptile to shoot it on-site.

However, animal rights lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said the department should protect wildlife from humans instead of taking up arms and killing them.

Sabah wildlife department director Augustine Tuuga said the department had recently received almost 30 reports of crocodile sightings, with at least six of them in Kota Kinabalu.

He said the crocodile spotted at Tanjung Lipat beach continued to move from one location to another.

Tuuga said saltwater crocodiles were more aggressive than freshwater ones. - FMT
