Umno's top brass will decide soon whether to impose a "no-contest" policy for the top two positions, said party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.
Speaking to reporters in Pontian, Johor today, Ahmad said the matter will be discussed during the party's supreme council meeting on Jan 12, on the eve of the party's special national delegates meeting.
"There has been no decision yet on the matter. We will have to wait (after the supreme council meeting)," he said, according to Bernama.
Umno must hold a party election by May 19 next year.
The election will be a closely watched affair because a change in leadership may affect the composition of the cabinet and the direction of the federal government, which comprises several coalitions.
This election will see Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi attempting to retain his seat after steering BN towards a working relationship with arch-rivals Pakatan Harapan.
Previous Umno national delegates assembly had seen party delegates vote unanimously to approve a "No Anwar, no DAP" policy.
However, Zahid is currently Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's deputy and sits in a cabinet that consists of DAP members.
Meanwhile, Ahmad said the special assembly will be asked to vote on two motions to amend the party's constitution.
The first involved Clause 20.11 which currently states that the membership of any Umno members will be automatically revoked if they leave the party or contest as an independent or a candidate for another party during an election.
Ahmad said the clause will be amended to suit new provisions in the Federal Constitution which were designed to discourage MPs from switching parties.
He said the delegates will also have to vote on amendments to Clause 8.4 to allow division information chiefs to be automatically elected as delegates to the Umno national delegates assembly every year. - Mkini
