PETALING JAYA: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has called for a thorough investigation into the Batang Kali landslide, saying that media reports speculating on its cause were premature.
Its president, Norlida Buniyamin, said it was greatly concerned over such media reports as they could cause confusion among the public.
“Statements on the cause of the landslide appearing in the media thus far are premature as they do not appear to be founded on engineering science, mechanics of soils or characteristics specific to the distressed ground.
“So, they should be treated as purely speculative in nature and are only obfuscating the public,” she said in a statement.
Norlida said the investigation into the cause of the landslide should be led by competent engineers with the assistance of other relevant professionals such as surveyors and geologists.
She said a proper investigation was crucial to prevent similar incidents.
Norlida said her organisation was willing to offer its assistance and expertise in any investigation.
The Batang Kali landslide, which occurred at three campsites at 2am on Friday, has so far claimed 24 lives. A total of 61 people survived the landslide.
Search and rescue operations continue for nine others who are still unaccounted for. - FMT
