PETALING JAYA: Over 400 areas in Selangor are suffering from water cuts after a lorry transporting essential oil crashed on a highway this morning, subsequently polluting the river nearby.

State executive councillor Hee Loy Sian said the lorry crashed at the Elite Highway near Sepang and its contents spilled into a tributary of Sungai Semenyih.

Sungai Semenyih is one of the main sources of raw water for the state.

He said this affected two water treatment plants, one of which was located 18km away from the accident site.

According to Hee, the Selangor water management board was carrying out clean-up work at the affected site, Sungai Limau Manis, and this was expected to be completed by 5pm.

This morning, Air Selangor said 472 areas in the state will face water supply disruptions due to odour pollution at the raw water intake at Jenderam Hilir.

A total of 196 areas in Sepang are affected by the incident, followed by 172 in Petaling, 54 in Hulu Langat, 27 in Kuala Langat, and 23 in Putrajaya. - FMT
