PETALING JAYA: Ariff Md Yusof has denied speculation that he may be making a comeback as Dewan Rakyat Speaker under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.
The election of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker for the new Parliament term is first on the agenda when the lower house convenes for two days from Dec 19.
“It’s just a rumour. I have no information on it,” he told FMT briefly, adding that the deadline for the submission of names is tomorrow.
The former judge served as Speaker from July 2018 until his removal in July 2020 after the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed and Perikatan Nasional took over.
Earlier, Sinar Harian reported that former law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had denied rumours that he would be appointed to replace current Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun.
Wan Junaidi also said he had not received any notice of such an appointment.
The former Santubong MP was elected Deputy Speaker in 2008 and served for a single term.
Azhar was appointed the Dewan Rakyat Speaker in July 2020, with much furore in the lower house.
The former Election Commission chief was the Muhyiddin Yassin-led government’s sole candidate for the post after a motion for Ariff to vacate his post was passed.
Opposition MPs did not nominate anyone for the post in protest. - FMT
