Umno must serve as check and balance to the current government without compromise, said its supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
Ahead of tonight’s supreme council meeting, the Rengit assemblyperson (above) listed several issues which Umno must press the government to expedite.
This included ensuring a “fair trial” for former premier Najib Abdul Razak, forming Royal Commissions of Inquiry (RCIs) on former attorney-general Tommy Thomas (on his memoirs) and Tabung Haji, charge Justice Nazlan Mohd Ghazali and former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akthar Aziz as well as to address the Pulau Batu Puteh issue.
Nazlan was the former high court judge who convicted Najib and sentenced him to 12 years in prison over the SRC International case. He has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal.
Najib, who supported the BN-Harapan alliance after the last general election resulted in a hung Parliament, has been serving his prison sentence since Aug 23 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction.
“Tonight is the first supreme council meeting since (Umno president) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, (deputy president) Mohamad Hassan, Zambry Abdul Kadir, Azalina Othman Said, Khaled Nordin and Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz joined (Prime Minister) Anwar Ibrahim’s cabinet.
“The supreme council must remain as a driving force, check and balance to the government. No compromise,” said Puad in a Facebook post.
Najib’s daughter: One last chance on Jan 19
In an Instagram post, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa noted that the judicial review for the SRC case is scheduled for Jan 19 next year.
“The fight for justice isn’t over. We still have one last chance. So we hide the scars, stitch up our wounds and get back on our feet,” she said.
Nooryana also said that “all hands are on deck” to ensure her father “gets justice this time.”
“If he wins in January, he will be free to come back to us, Inshallah,” she added.
On a separate matter, Puad said PN should be open to an investigation regarding the allegation that its chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin had abused RM600 billion of public funds meant to aid those in need when he was the prime minister.
“PN should not object (to the investigation). It is in line with PN’s tagline, Prihatin, Bersih dan Stabil (Caring, Clean and Stable).
“This is not about revenge or abuse of power. It is taking turns to find the truth. In the past, others were investigated, now you are being investigated,” he added.
