Hamzah Zainuddin and Takiyuddin Hassan - the secretary-generals of Bersatu and PAS, respectively, are listed as candidates for the Dewan Rakyat opposition leader role.
According to a member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) supreme council, who spoke on condition of anonymity, both Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and his PAS counterpart Abdul Hadi Awang are not interested in the position.
"To face Anwar as prime minister, PN has to nominate someone with vigour. Therefore, the PN leadership is considering Hamzah (above) and Takiyuddin," said the source.
The source added that a dark horse in the race was PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
"However, Tuan Ibrahim is characterised as 'soft' and therefore, less suitable.
"We need someone aggressive to attack Anwar. It's likely to be Hamzah. He can be Anwar's equal," said the source.

The Dewan Rakyat will reconvene on Dec 19 for a two-day sitting.
The agenda includes the election of a new speaker, a vote of confidence on the prime minister and the passing of a "mini-budget". - Mkini
