Home Ministry slammed over 'official launch' of flood relief mission

Netizens are slamming the Home Ministry for holding an official function to launch its flood relief mission to the East Coast, instead of helping victims on ground zero already.

This after national news agency Bernama tweeted photos of Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail officially launching the mission in Putrajaya this morning, complete with a speech and a banner on the stage of the launch.

Twitter user Azeel Eskandar Azmi said if the government was sincere in sending aid, it should be done without a “proper launch”.

"People have been trapped for 5-6 days without electricity or water supply. This picture was taken in Rantau Panjang (Kelantan) yesterday, during a flood aid mission. You have to expedite your timing, dear state, and federal governments," he wrote as the caption to a photo showing an inundated street.

Elaborating, Azeel, who tweets under the handle @AzayAzmi, said he was appalled by the gimmick used to launch the flood aid mission.

"When I passed by yesterday, and children were screaming for food and rice from the balconies of their flooded houses, you still have time to hold an 'official launch' and photo opportunity?" he asked.

Another netizen, who goes by the name Hazy_Rain (@justalhafiz) concurred, saying that such practices should be left behind.

"I agree we should leave practices like this behind but I also acknowledge that politics in Malaysia is a lot about the optics. Your actions must be seen to be done," he tweeted.

In his speech during the launching ceremony today, Saifuddin said the police have been deployed to safeguard the homes and property of flood victims, reported Bernama.

According to him, the relief mission, which was mounted by the ministry, with the cooperation from Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia, will bring 1,000 food baskets to two places in Kelantan, namely Machang and Tanah Merah, which have been badly affected by the floods. - Mkini
