I will vote for PM based on my conscience - PKR MP

PKR MP Hassan Abdul Karim has criticised the memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed by MPs ahead of the confidence vote in Parliament, which is scheduled on Monday.

In a statement today, Hassan voiced his concerns about the ultimatum set in the agreement.

“On Dec 19, a sacred date in our Parliament, I declare here, I will vote freely according to my heart.

“I will give a vote of confidence to my friend, the prime minister.

“However, please listen to me. Do we have legitimacy?” he asked.

He questioned the freedom lost by MPs to vote freely in the vote of confidence and the potential “weaponisation” of the MOA.

“Let me get ‘beheaded’ but I'm not willing for democracy to be buried in Parliament,” Hassan said.

The Pasir Gudang MP, despite concerns over the “weaponisation” of the MOA, confirmed with Malaysiakini that he will be lending his support to his party colleagues.

“In my declaration, I confirm will be voting in support of Anwar (Ibrahim) as prime minister, not because of the agreement but my conscience,” he said via Whatsapp.

Yesterday, Anwar and other leaders of parties that are part of the current government formally signed an MOA.

Aside from Anwar, BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg and Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal were present at the signing ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.

Several lawmakers such as Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin have voiced concerns about potential issues concerning the agreement.

The Perikatan Nasional MP claimed that the agreement was a prelude to dictatorship, adding that it was also illegal, dangerous and unenforceable.

Mas Ermieyati said that Clause 4 of the agreement states that all MPs are required to vote or support the prime minister in motions relating to confidence votes, supply bills or procedural motions with effect on the federal government’s stability.

However, she argued that the clause requiring MPs to vote for the premier during confidence votes at the risk of losing their elected seats contravened Article 49A of the Federal Constitution. - Mkini
