King, Queen express condolences to family of late Public Bank founder Teh

KUALA LUMPUR:Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah express their condolences to the family of Public Bank founder and chairman emeritus Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow, who passed away on Monday (Dec 12) morning.

A post on Istana Negara's official Facebook page said Their Majesties expressed sadness at the passing of Teh and hoped that his family would be patient and determined in facing this moment of grief.

"Their Majesties appreciate Teh's contribution to the banking and financial industry as well as the nation's economy."

Their Majesties described the passing of Teh as a great loss to national banking.

"The late Teh, who was 92 years old, is one of the important individuals and like a giant in the development of financial institutions in Malaysia.

"The late Teh established Public Bank in 1965. Since then, Teh has overseen its evolution into a modern and integrated financial institution with an extensive network of over 200 domestic and overseas branches.

"Public Bank is also one of the main banks in Malaysia," Istana Negara said in the post.

Teh passed away peacefully at 10.20am on Monday at the age of 92.

Teh was born in Singapore on March 14, 1930, and he attended his formal primary and secondary education at the Anglo Chinese School in Singapore, a biography note on Public Bank's website said.

He has been married to Puan Seri Tay Sock Noy since 1956, and they have four children.
