Former communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa said he had nothing to do with the transfer of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) shares from Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd - its subsidiary which manages the iconic Kuala Lumpur tower, to another company in October.
In a message to Malaysiakini, he said TM is a publicly listed company and does not need the minister's permission to transfer its shares.
"TM was not under the communications minister... it is a publicly listed company," the ex-minister said.
He was responding to a question on whether TM needed his permission as the communications minister at the time to sell its shares to another entity.
"Nothing to do with the communications minister. Go ask TM... if the company was making RM25 million in profit, why didn't they want to keep it and sell it off," Annuar (above) added.
Malaysiakini contacted Annuar to get his response on the issue of Telekom selling off its 10 million shares in Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd to a company called Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd.
The deal, which was made in October, has raised eyebrows because the subsidiary was purportedly very profitable and the buyer was not a well-known company.
As Annuar was the minister in charge of communications when the selling went down, netizens raised questions about whether the former Ketereh MP had anything to do with the decision.
According to the Companies Commission system, Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd had a change of shareholding on Oct 31 this year.
It showed that 10,000,000 shares owned by TM had changed hands to Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd, a general trading company registered in 2008 with a total capital of RM1 million.
Malaysiakini has reached TM’s media management unit for comments.
Meanwhile, Digital Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil in a statement said the ministry takes the allegation and questions raised on the matter seriously.
According to Fahmi, he has been given a detailed briefing by the ministry on Menara KL’s concession and will meet with TM management for another briefing by the company on Jan 3.
"I was informed that Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd's management concession for Menara KL is in its third interim period until Dec 31.
"The ministry is closely monitoring the issue and ready to give full cooperation to authorities should they open any investigation regarding this issue," Fahmi said. - Mkini
