Malaysia supports UN Security Council resolution on Myanmar

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia welcomes the resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the situation in Myanmar, stressing the resolution is significant in supporting Asean’s central role in finding a peaceful solution for the country led by a military junta.

In a statement, the foreign ministry said that Malaysia will work closely within Asean and its external partners to ensure progress in these efforts in the interests of the people of Myanmar.

“Malaysia had previously called on the UNSC to fulfil its charter-mandated responsibility. This council (UNSC) also encourages the international community to support the Asean-led mechanism and process in this regard, including the implementation of the Asean Five-Point Consensus,” the statement from Wisma Putra said.

The UNSC adopted a resolution yesterday, denouncing the Myanmar military’s rights violations since the Feb 1, 2021 coup, Human Rights Watch was reported as saying.

The landmark resolution, passed with 12 “yes” votes and 3 abstentions, reflects the Myanmar junta’s growing isolation generated by security force abuses amounting to crimes against humanity and war crimes.

It is also the first Security Council resolution on Myanmar since the country, formerly known as Burma, acquired independence from Britain in 1948. - FMT
