No food or help for flood victims - families, friends turn to social media

Families and friends of flood victims have turned to social media to seek assistance for those trapped in their homes on the east coast due to rising floodwaters.

So far 23,000 flood victims have been evacuated but the situation continues to be dire for others, especially in Terengganu and Kelantan.

"My siblings and others have been without food supply for three days now.

“(They said) this is because assistance was given to places that were more serious. Don't you want to help them? Please, I am begging," tweeted a netizen with the handle @sambawolf.

According to this Twitter user, who attached a screenshot of a text conversation with the victim, the area referred to is Pondok Pasir Tumboh in Kelantan.

Meanwhile, @wandy1985 sought help on behalf of a friend whose family is trapped in Kampung Gong Kamuntong, Besut, Terengganu.

"My friend said there is no boat for his family. Food supply has run out. My friend does not have a Twitter (account), so I tweeted (on his behalf). Hope assistance will reach them."

The tweet was accompanied by a screenshot of a conversation between the friend and a family, which read: "Please help. Many are stuck, there are old people and infants. We called the Fire and Rescue Department for help several times."

Another netizen, @FarahHar0r0, who also shared her family’s plight on Twitter, told Malaysiakini that they have been rescued.

"My family is okay now. They were rescued... and now they are waiting for food because the food was soaked (in the flood) or the supply has run out in town (Besut, Terengganu).

"But there are still people trapped in Kampung Kubang Depu and Kampung Jebak Puyuh," she added.

Yesterday, the Meteorological Department issued a continuous rain warning for eight states - Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Johor - which is expected to last until tomorrow.

Those evacuated are being sheltered at 280 relief centres in five states.

Earlier, it was reported that three sisters in Tumpat, Kelantan, died of electrocution after their house was flooded.

Bernama reported that 10 major rivers in Kelantan have breached the danger levels in six districts namely Kuala Krai, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, and Bachok as of 1pm. - Mkini
