PETALING JAYA: Worried by the voting trend in the recent general election (GE15), the state Pakatan Harapan (PH) is drawing up strategies to go all out in seven Penang state seats that it has classified as “dangerous”.
State PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow said they had identified the seats that they may have problems retaining in the state election due next year, based on the recent voting pattern.
Without naming them, the Penang chief minister said voting trends in GE15 in the parliamentary constituencies these seats are situated in indicate that PH could find it tough to defend them next year.
“My views are based on the GE15 parliamentary polling channel results,” Bernama reported him as saying after officiating at the “Khatan Perdana Kadun Jawi 2022” programme in Nibong Tebal today.
Also present was education minister and Nibong Tebal MP Fadhlina Sidek.
Chow was elaborating on his earlier statement in which he predicted that based on GE15 voting trends, PH was in danger of losing six to seven seats in the Penang state elections.
He was also reported to have said that although this would not affect PH’s dominance in Penang, the coalition’s influence in the state may not be as strong as it is now after the polls.
In this regard, Chow said PH component parties would lay out strategies and organise community programmes in addition to meeting relevant agencies for solutions over issues that dominated GE15.
In the last state election, PH won 37 of the 40 state seats in Penang, Barisan Nasional two seats and PAS one.
However, following Bersatu’s exit from PH that led to the formation of Perikatan Nasional (PN), and after the sacking of Seberang Jaya and Sungai Acheh assemblymen from PKR who later joined Bersatu, the composition changed to 33 seats for PH, two for BN and five for PN. - FMT
