Chief secretary to the government Mohd Zuki Ali will announce the status of secretaries-general of ministries, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today.
He said this when asked to comment on the status of secretaries-general in ministries that have been merged.
“That is a matter of administration. The chief secretary to the government (Zuki) will handle it and make an announcement,” Anwar said at a press conference in Putrajaya after announcing his list of deputy prime ministers.
The new ministries in Anwar’s cabinet include the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry, now led by Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which was renamed from its previous moniker - the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.
Asked about the status of the Finance Ministry’s Treasury secretary-general Asri Hamidin who was reportedly put on leave, Awar said it was a “normal change”.
“It is a normal change and does not involve issues that were raised and made in the media.
“This is a normal change that also involves promotions or department transfers,” he said adding that the change will be decided by Zuki (above).
It has been speculated recently that Asri would be replaced after his absence at the Finance Ministry, when Anwar clocked in as finance minister, was noticed.
The 56-year-old was appointed in May 2020 by then-prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, serving under former finance minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
The New Straits Times reported that Anwar made a passing remark that same day about appointing a new secretary-general but did not divulge who it may be. - Mkini
