PETALING JAYA: A group of resort operators in a jungle near Gopeng, Perak, are worried that a road leading to the area may collapse after repeated calls for urgent repairs have gone unheeded.
The operators say they are concerned that parts of the 4km stretch of Jalan Kampung Pintu Padang, which crosses Sungai Geroh, appear to have had their embankments cleared.
Their representative, Maninderjit Singh, said the road is not only used to get to the 11 eco-themed resorts, but also by nearly 5,000 residents.
He said there are also a health clinic, a primary school and five Orang Asal villages there. The villages are Kampung Ulu Geruntum, Kampung Kepayang, Kampung Poh, Kampung Ulu Kampar and Kampung Ulu Groh.
Maninderjit said the resort operators and Tok Batins (village heads) have been writing to the local authorities and the menteri besar’s office to highlight defects along the road.
He said there have been a few minor incidents involving motorists.
“The road is narrow and only one car can pass at a time,” he told FMT. “A few vehicles have gone over the cliff but their drivers were not seriously hurt.
“The resort operators and residents have been pooling their money to maintain the road, but this can’t go on forever.
“The road needs to be widened and repaired. The bare slopes must be strengthened to prevent landslides.”
Maninderjit said contractors had installed a 5G tower along the road recently, “causing further damage”.
It is learnt that the road is under the maintenance of the Kampar district land and mines office (PTG).
“PTG Kampar has not done anything. There is one stretch between Kampung Pintu Padang and Adeline Villa that is in danger of erosion. We suspect the landowner at the bottom of the road had cleared the land.
“We fear that water may be seeping into the road. We have also noticed a few portholes and are worried that the road may be slowly breaking up.”
