Selangor MB apologises over water supply disruption ahead of Christmas Day

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has apologised to the people for the unscheduled water supply disruption affecting more than 400 areas in the state ahead of the Christmas celebration.

Amirudin, in a posting on his Facebook today, nevertheless stressed that the Selangor state government is sparing no efforts to restore the water supply as soon as possible.

He said he has contacted and alerted the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Ministry to resolve the predicament faced by residents at 472 areas at four districts in the state and one in Putrajaya.

"It is with regret that an accident which took place outside Selangor subsequently affected the people in the state," wrote Amirudin.

He was referring to anaccident involving a 20-tonne container lorry carrying a load of perfume oil at KM44.1 northbound of the North-South Expressway Central Link (Elite) near Bandar Serenia, Negri Sembilan.

The accident resulted the essence of the perfume oil to spill and flow into a river that connects with Sungai Semenyih river.

The accident also forced the state government to suspend water treatment at the Sungai Semenyih and the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants after an odour pollution was detected in the river.

Elaborating on the accident, Amiruddin said the incident resulted 1,000 litre of perfume oil essence flow into and caused odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih.

The state government through the Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS), he said, has rolled out several measures to control the pollution and restored water supply at the affected areas.

Among them included placing three "oil boom" and one "oil pad" box around the area where the odour pollution was detected.

He added that 12 "Activated Carbon" begs were also installed at the same location to mitigate the impact of the pollution.

"We will also released about 360 million of water daily from the Sungai Semenyih Dam to increase the flow rate of the Sungai Semenyih to reduce and flush out the impact from the odour pollution," he said.

Amirudin said Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has also mobilised 82 water tankers as well as static water tanks at the affected areas to reduce the impact of the water supply disruption among the people. - NST
