KUALA LUMPUR: The trial of Siti Bainun Ahd Razali, the founder of Rumah Bonda, will proceed as scheduled on Jan 5 as no date has been set for surgery to address her health problems.
Her lawyer, Nurul Hafidzah Hassan, said they were ready for the trial to commence.
“The proceedings will have to continue as there is no date set for her (Siti Bainun’s) surgery. We are ready, but we don’t know if Siti Bainun will be well enough on that day.
“By law, she is required to be present in court during the defence stage. She will be the first to testify.”
Siti Bainun, who has some health problems, was given 22 days of medical leave in November.
The sessions court had previously fixed nine days in January, seven days in February and 11 days in March next year for Siti Bainun to defend herself against two criminal charges framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
On Nov 24, the court ordered Siti Bainun to enter her defence on charges of neglecting and abusing a 13-year-old Down Syndrome girl known as Bella after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against her at the end of the prosecution’s case.
Twenty-two prosecution witnesses were called in the trial which began in March. - FMT
