The four-legged heroes of Batang Kali

 

Since the landslide in Batang Kali four days ago, search and rescue personnel have been toiling on the ground. Photographs have been circulating on social media depicting their exhaustion.

However, Bernama reported how the efforts of the K9 detection unit have gone unnoticed.

Wading through the thick mud, slush, and rain, the operation had also taken a toll on these four-legged heroes.

One of them, Blake, an English springer spaniel, “keeled over exhausted”, read the report.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said Blake had been slogging for two consecutive days, and was now recuperating.

He added that 11 dogs, six belonging to the Fire and Rescue Department, four from the police and one from the army, are at the scene and would be operating on a rotation basis.

Meanwhile, Blake’s efforts did not go unnoticed on social media, with various quarters lauding the canine for its service.

“Selamat berehat Blake. Jasamu dikenang! (Rest well, Blake. Your contribution is appreciated),” said the Malaysian Animal Association.  

Harian Metro named four other dogs involved in the search and rescue operation - Frankie, Denti, Pop, and Tar.

As of yesterday, 24 bodies have been recovered while nine people are still missing. - Mkini
