KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has insisted that the trial of a defamation suit filed by Lim Guan Eng and his son, Clint Lim, against blogger “Papagomo”, will only take place in mid-2024 as previously scheduled.
The court had on Feb 22 fixed the trial to be held between Aug 12 and 16, 2024.
Kok Yuen Lin, who represented the Lims, said her request for the trial dates to be brought forward was refused by senior assistant registrar Haslinda A Raof.
“She (Haslinda) said the trial dates will remain as previously fixed,” Kok told FMT after case management, which was conducted virtually, concluded earlier today.
Counsel Nurfazilah Jaffar represented the blogger, whose real name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris.
In the suit filed in October 2020, the Lims had alleged that Wan Muhammad had spread false accusations on Facebook that Clint had been detained while trying to smuggle RM2 million in cash into Singapore without declaring the money.
The incident stemmed from a Chinese vernacular newspaper report in March 2020. The newspaper subsequently published a retraction and an apology.
In court documents, Wan Muhammad denied that he was “Papagomo”.
He also denied publishing the post on Facebook. - FMT
